Army recovers firearm, IED after clash in Northern Samar

Philippines Troops from the Philippine Army’s 8th Infantry Division recovered a firearm, an improvised explosive device (IED), ammunition and other war materials following an encounter with suspected remnants of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) in Las Navas, Northern Samar, early Oct. 18, 2026.

The encounter occurred in Barangay Capotuan while government troops were conducting joint focused military operations. The armed group was believed to be composed of remnants of the CTG’s Sub-Regional Committee Emporium.

The firefight lasted several minutes before the armed group withdrew toward the mountainous area, leaving behind one squad automatic rifle, an IED, several rounds of ammunition and other military equipment, according to the military.

Brig. Gen. Carmelito Pangatungan, commander of the 803rd Infantry Brigade, said the operation aimed to protect residents of Las Navas from possible harassment and threats from the armed group.

Pangatungan thanked residents for their continued trust and cooperation with government troops. He also said the Army would sustain its focused military operations until the remaining CTG members were captured, surrendered or brought to justice.

The 8th Infantry Division reiterated its commitment to addressing the remaining communist armed conflict in Eastern Visayas in coordination with local governments and communities.

The division also encouraged CTG members who wish to surrender to avail themselves of the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, which offers assistance to former rebels and their families.
