Sen. Erwin Tulfo confirmed that discussions regarding another possible change in the leadership of the Philippine Senate remain ongoing, despite the recent installation of Senate President Alan Cayetano.
Speaking to members of the Senate media, Tulfo said talks continue among senators regarding the current leadership setup in the chamber.
According to Tulfo, the minority bloc currently has 11 members, while the majority bloc has 12. He noted that if even one senator from the opposing side decides to join their group, the numbers could be enough to significantly alter the balance of power in the Senate.
Tulfo described the situation using a boxing analogy, saying that if one member crosses over, the contest for the required numbers could effectively be over.
The senator also reiterated an earlier statement that attempts to replace Senate leadership cannot succeed without sufficient support from fellow senators. He said a leadership challenge would not push through unless the group seeking change secures the necessary votes.
Speculation about another leadership shakeup emerged only a week after Cayetano assumed the Senate presidency. Reports of a possible move to unseat him circulated in recent days, although no leadership change materialized during the past week.
The Senate presidency is one of the most influential positions in the chamber, overseeing legislative proceedings and managing the Senate’s agenda. As discussions continue behind the scenes, the numerical advantage between the two blocs remains narrow.
Tulfo did not identify any senator who might switch sides, nor did he provide further details regarding the ongoing discussions.
For now, Cayetano remains Senate President while talks on a possible leadership change continue within the chamber.
