A video showing a bright object believed to be a meteor streaking across the night sky in Valencia, Negros Oriental has gone viral on social media, drawing public attention and prompting checks by local authorities.
The footage, recorded in Barangay Jawa on the evening of Jan. 2, shows a glowing, flame-like object moving rapidly before disappearing from view. The video was uploaded by Rea Lachica, who said her sibling first noticed the slanting descent of the bright object.
In an interview with Brigada News Dumaguete, Lachica said she immediately used her mobile phone to record what she could of the incident. She clarified that the video was not generated by artificial intelligence and that she was only able to capture the latter part of the object’s descent.
Authorities said there were no immediate signs of damage linked to the incident. SFO1 Sonny Baldado, investigator of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Valencia, said an initial assessment of the area found no fire damage or ground impact.
Baldado added that the BFP is coordinating with the Philippine National Police to further assess the incident and verify reports related to the sighting.
Within 19 hours of being posted on Facebook, the video had already garnered about 1.1 million views, reflecting widespread public interest in the unusual event.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact nature of the object, but coordination among local agencies remains ongoing as part of standard verification procedures.
