An elderly couple and two children lost their home after it was allegedly set on fire by their own son in Purok 14, Tongantongan, Valencia City, Bukidnon on the evening of Feb. 6.
Authorities identified the victims as Moises Ortega Jr., and his wife Norma Ortega. They were with their two grandchildren, aged 9 and 11, when the incident happened. No belongings were saved from the fire, according to initial reports.
The suspect was identified as John Ortega, who has no permanent residence. Barangay Kagawad Lorence Raras said he arrived home intoxicated and became angry after his father told him to do something and change. The situation escalated, and the house was later set on fire.
The suspect fled the area on a motorcycle owned by a resident from a nearby purok. He was later apprehended by Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team members and turned over to police authorities.
No estimate of the damage caused by the fire has been released.
The affected family is currently staying at a local church while authorities continue their investigation into the incident. Police have not released further details as of the latest update.
