Sen. Jinggoy Estrada calls DOJ plunder recommendation ‘unjust’

Sen. Jinggoy Estrada described as an “unfortunate development” the recommendation of the Department of Justice (DOJ) to file plunder, graft, and bribery charges against him in connection with the country’s flood control project controversy.

Estrada said the recommendation was confusing and unfair, especially after the Senate Legislative Budget Research and Monitoring Office reportedly stated that there were no records showing he pushed for insertions in the proposed 2025 national budget.

According to the senator, Senate Blue Ribbon Committee Chairman Sen. Ping Lacson also acknowledged this information during a privilege speech.

The DOJ recommendation stemmed from complaints linked to the ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities involving flood control projects in the country.

Estrada maintained that the accusations against him should be carefully reviewed before any conclusions are made. He stressed that proper legal procedures and evaluation of evidence must be followed throughout the investigation process.

To address the issue, Estrada said he had already filed an omnibus motion before the DOJ seeking the reopening of the preliminary investigation into the cases filed by the National Bureau of Investigation regarding the flood control projects.

He said the move was intended to ensure due process and fair assessment of all evidence and official findings connected to the case.

The senator also emphasized that official records should be examined thoroughly before criminal liability is determined.

As of writing, the DOJ has yet to issue further statements regarding Estrada’s omnibus motion. The investigation into the flood control project controversy remains ongoing.
