Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa has urged the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to prohibit politicians from distributing financial aid during the campaign period. He said this measure would prevent the misuse of government assistance programs like the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) for political gain.
Dela Rosa emphasized that the distribution of aid should be handled by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) rather than lawmakers. According to him, leaving the task to the DSWD ensures that aid is delivered equitably and free from political manipulation.
The senator pointed out that social assistance programs are being used to serve the personal interests of some politicians, especially with the 2025 midterm elections approaching. While he clarified that he supports the provision of aid to those in need, he expressed concern over its potential exploitation during election periods.
Dela Rosa also said he has no issue if his office is excluded from receiving allocations under the AKAP program in the 2025 National Budget. He explained that foregoing these funds would help curb their misuse, reinforcing his commitment to fair governance.
The senator’s statements highlight the need for stricter regulations to ensure that public resources are not politicized. His call to action has sparked discussions on the ethical distribution of government aid and the role of politicians in social welfare programs.
