Resumption of Classes in Cebu After Earthquake May Take Up to 30 Days

The Department of Education (DepEd) reported that it may take up to 30 days before classes can resume in areas affected by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Cebu.

In an interview, DepEd Undersecretary for Operations Malcolm Garma said the timeline will depend on how quickly damaged or collapsed classrooms can be repaired or rebuilt.

In Bogo City alone, 38 schools sustained severe damage.

He added that their assessment is still ongoing, as they are unable to visit some schools due to aftershocks.

Across all affected areas, including Regions 5, 6, and 7, nearly 5,600 classrooms have suffered major damage.

Some of these schools are already part of DepEd’s reconstruction program, while others are expected to be included in the next phase of rehabilitation.
