Residents pull coffin across raging river in Leyte

Residents pulled a coffin across a fast-moving river in Barangay Bung-aw, Hilongos, Leyte, highlighting ongoing concerns about the lack of safe crossings in the area.

A video circulating online shows several residents carefully dragging the coffin, which was tied to a rope, as they waded through the strong current. The force of the water made the crossing difficult, and the coffin nearly struck obstacles several times while being moved across the river.

According to the uploader of the video, a hanging bridge previously connected the community but was damaged. With the bridge no longer usable, residents have been left to cross the river on foot, even when the current is strong.

The situation becomes more dangerous during bad weather, when sudden rainfall can cause the river to swell. Residents said crossing the river is especially difficult for students and others who need to travel daily.

The uploader clarified that the river is not always as dangerous when there is no rain. However, crossing remains risky, particularly for children and during sudden increases in water levels.

The incident drew attention to the conditions faced by residents in the barangay, who said they have long dealt with the challenges of crossing the river without proper infrastructure.

Residents are now calling on authorities to address their situation and provide a safer way to cross, especially during emergencies and severe weather. They urged the government to take action and prevent similar risks in the future.
