Residents complain of foul odor from mango company in Malandag

Residents in Sitio Lower Lamkanal, Barangay Malandag, Malungon, complained about a foul odor allegedly coming from a mango processing company.

Barangay Malandag officials immediately acted after several residents raised concerns regarding the lingering smell near their communities.

According to Kagawad Roy Rinner Octavio, chairperson of the Health and Sanitation Committee, multiple complaints already reached their office recently.

Octavio said barangay officials conducted a meeting with the BLGU, MENRO, and sanitary inspectors on May 11 regarding the issue.

He personally visited the company and confirmed noticing a strong odor coming from the establishment during the inspection conducted there.

Octavio explained that residents from Sitio Lower Lamkanal first complained, but nearby Sitio Maknit residents have already reported similar concerns.

He added that the odor allegedly comes from the company’s lagoon containing liquid waste produced during mango processing operations daily.

According to Octavio, discarded mango seeds and peels also remain inside the facility, although those materials reportedly cause less odor.

Barangay Captain Helen Aradanas said the company already cooperated with authorities and requested 15 to 30 days to address concerns.

Aradanas clarified that officials do not immediately plan closing the company because many workers employed there also come from Malandag.

She emphasized that the company continues providing livelihood opportunities for local residents while authorities monitor compliance and environmental sanitation measures.
