Discovery of Large Sea Creature
The remains of a large sea creature were found on the shore of Sitio Balasdiyot, Barangay Calaboon in Dumanjug, Cebu. The discovery was made around 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, 2024, by local resident Regil Bani.
Locals Initially Believed it Was a ‘Manta Ray’
Bani described the creature as having a long tail, leading locals to believe it was a “salanga” or manta ray. However, the identification was soon questioned.
BFAR-7 Clarifies the Discovery
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 7 quickly clarified that the remains did not belong to a manta ray, but rather a marine mammal. The area where the creature was found, part of the Tañon Strait, is known for hosting various large sea creatures.
Recommendation for Proper Disposal
Johan Tejada, Fishing Regulation Officer 2 of BFAR-7, recommended that the remains be buried immediately to prevent further concerns and ensure proper disposal.
Authorities continue to investigate the origins of the creature, and locals are advised to avoid approaching the area until the situation is resolved.
