Prices of chili, calamansi, and tomatoes continue to rise, felt by consumers

Consumers continue to feel the impact of high prices of basic goods such as chili, calamansi, and tomatoes, even as Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data show a relatively low inflation rate

In November 2025, the inflation rate was recorded at 1.5%, and it increased to 1.8% in December 2025. However, local residents and market-goers report that prices of some essential goods remain noticeably high.

For example, labuyo chili has reached 1,000 PHP per kilo, while some vendors sell it at 800 PHP per kilo. Consumers note that sellers often try to quickly sell off their remaining stock to avoid losses.

It’s not just chili that has increased in price. Calamansi is now between 150–230 PHP per kilo, while tomatoes have also risen to 150–230 PHP per kilo, up from the previous 100 PHP. According to consumers, prices of these goods have nearly doubled compared to before.

Meanwhile, agriculture group SINAG said that the usual cost for chili is 500–600 PHP, and the maximum market price should only be 700 PHP, but current prices exceed this. Because of this, many consumers are calling for monitoring and regulation of essential goods prices to prevent undue burdens on buyers.

The sudden increase in prices is attributed to supply shortages, higher transportation costs, and other local and international factors.
