Once driven into the hills by the sound of gunfire, former rebels and residents from areas that used to be war-torn now return to society, embraced by applause, support, and opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.
The Association of Negros Producers (ANP), supported by the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) of Negros Occidental under the Balik-Salig program, honored various organizations during the 2nd ANP-PGNO Balik-Salig Awards held Friday, May 30, at SM City Bacolod.
The awards celebrated the craftsmanship and creativity of individuals and associations, some of whom once fought as combatants but now build their communities.
Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 6 Director Rachel Nufable, in her message, emphasized that the awards not only recognize outstanding products but also reflect “the story of Negros: our rich culture, resilience, and the hardworking hands behind every craft.”

Provincial Technology and Livelihood Development Center head Libay Alarcon, representing Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Lacson, expressed gratitude to all participants. She pointed out that the event, which featured both food and non-food items, highlighted the creativity, talent, and business spirit of Negros Occidental.
“Your perseverance and commitment to excellence drive our province, Negros Occidental, forward and inspire fellow Negrenses,” she said.
Alarcon also praised the ANP for their leadership in organizing the event. “We extend our deepest gratitude to the ANP for their exceptional leadership and vision in organizing this meaningful celebration.”
“Your role in empowering local entrepreneurs and nurturing cultural innovation in Negros Occidental truly deserves recognition,” she added.

The Balik-Salig initiative, meaning “bring back the trust,” replaces the language of violence with empowerment through livelihood, capacity-building, and peace advocacies.
As former rebels and residents of former conflict zones now craft unique products, their transformation becomes more than just economic. It symbolizes a broader message of peace and shared progress.
Meanwhile, ANP Chairperson Arlene Infante emphasized the importance of this year’s competition. She called it a way of “honoring those who have turned potential into progress and grit into triumph.”
“To our awardees — your stories inspire us, and your dedication fuels Negros’ growth,” Infante said. She further highlighted the importance of small- and medium-sized enterprises and assisted communities in sustaining innovation.
“These innovations continue to excite and serve as a source of Negrense pride,” she added.*
