A police officer was wounded after suspects opened fire and threw a hand grenade during a search warrant operation in Barangay Salooban, Bunawan District, Davao City on the night of Dec. 29.
The Davao City Police Office said the grenade hurled at the operating team failed to explode, preventing further injuries. Police were serving a search warrant at a residential house when the suspects allegedly resisted, triggering a shootout.
During the exchange of gunfire, Patrolman Geordy Fiel was hit in the leg. He was immediately given medical attention and is currently recovering from his injury.
Police arrested the primary target of the operation, identified only as alias Rey-rey, along with five companions. Authorities said various firearms were seized from the suspects during the arrest.
The DCPO reported that all six suspects are now detained and facing charges for violations of Republic Act 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, and Republic Act 9516. They also face charges of frustrated murder and attempted murder in connection with the shooting incident.
According to police, alias Rey-rey had only recently been released from the Davao Penal Colony, where he was previously detained for cases related to illegal possession of firearms and explosives.
Following the incident, DCPO Acting City Director Col. Mannan Muarip provided financial assistance worth P50,000 to Patrolman Fiel as support while he undergoes treatment.
Police said the investigation is ongoing as they prepare the necessary cases against the suspects. Authorities reiterated their commitment to continue operations against armed individuals who pose a threat to public safety in Davao City.
