PNP steps up campaign vs online baby-selling

The Philippine National Police has intensified its campaign against the rising cases of babies being sold through social media, with authorities now targeting both local groups and suspected international crime rings.

PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police are focusing not only on domestic operators but also on international syndicates believed to be involved in human trafficking and other illegal activities. He described the scheme as an “alarming racket” that must be stopped.

The PNP chief ordered specialized police units to strengthen intelligence monitoring and operations against groups using digital platforms to sell infants. Authorities said the campaign aims to track down the sources of the babies, intermediaries and buyers involved in the transactions.

Data from the Women and Children Protection Center showed that several infants were rescued in a series of anti-trafficking operations conducted from Feb. 2 to Feb. 4. Authorities also reported that some babies were being sold for as low as 10,000 pesos.

Police said the operations are part of a broader effort to dismantle networks behind online baby-selling. The PNP is coordinating with other government agencies and international partners to identify and pursue those responsible.

Authorities said they are working to ensure that all involved parties face appropriate charges under the law.

The PNP also warned that it is prepared to file cases against social media platforms that fail to act against baby-selling activities on their sites.

Police leadership said protecting women and children remains a priority, and efforts will continue to hold accountable those involved in illegal trafficking and related crimes.
