Phivolcs warns of ashfall risks after Kanlaon eruption

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned residents living near Kanlaon Volcano to remain cautious following the eruption that released thick ash late Thursday night.

Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said the ash emitted during the recent eruption was thicker compared with the volcano’s previous eruption on Feb. 19.

In an interview with Brigada News FM Manila, Bacolcol explained that the plume produced during the eruption also reached a higher altitude, allowing ash to spread across a wider area.

Because of this, the agency continues to remind nearby communities to take precautions against the possible effects of volcanic ash.

Phivolcs advised residents to protect themselves from ashfall, particularly those with health conditions. Individuals who have asthma, pregnant women, senior citizens and people with other medical concerns are encouraged to wear face masks when exposed to ash in the air.

Volcanic ash can cause respiratory irritation and other health problems, especially among vulnerable groups.

The agency said it will continue monitoring the activity of Kanlaon Volcano and providing updates as needed.

Aside from residents on the ground, aviation authorities have also been alerted about the situation.

Phivolcs warned aircraft to avoid flying close to the volcano due to the possibility of another eruption occurring at any time.

Volcanic ash clouds pose hazards to aircraft engines and visibility, making them dangerous for flight operations.

Authorities continue to remind the public to follow official advisories and remain alert as the volcano’s activity remains under close observation.

Phivolcs said it will keep coordinating with local authorities to ensure timely warnings and safety measures for affected communities.
