The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has denied allegations that the Philippines is responsible for escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea, asserting instead that China’s actions are the source of instability in the region.
PCG Spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Jay Tarriela said China poses threats to peace and stability through alleged deception, coercion, and aggressive maneuvers in contested waters.
The statement followed reports from Chinese state media claiming that the Philippines was provoking unrest in the disputed maritime area.
Tarriela pointed to the situation at Panganiban Reef, also known as Mischief Reef, where he said the scale of China’s reclamation activities is evident. He explained that Philippine aircraft conducting maritime domain awareness flights in the area are reportedly challenged by Chinese forces asserting what they describe as “indisputable sovereignty” over the territory.
He also said there were instances when the Chinese side allegedly launched flares toward Philippine aircraft during operations in the area.
Tarriela further stated that China initially occupied Panganiban Reef under the claim that it would construct shelters for fishermen. He said the site has since developed into one of China’s largest military installations in the South China Sea.
The PCG reiterated that the Philippines maintains its presence in the West Philippine Sea to safeguard national interests and monitor activities within its maritime zones. Officials emphasized that the country’s actions are aimed at protecting territorial rights and maintaining regional peace.
