Malacañang clarified that the P20-per-kilo rice to be sold under a government program is not substandard or unfit for human consumption, following criticism from Vice President Sara Duterte.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the rice to be distributed through the Department of Agriculture’s initiative is the same variety currently sold in markets at P33 per kilo. The price reduction will be made possible through subsidies from both the national and local government units.
The clarification came after backlash on social media and comments from Duterte, who expressed concerns that the rice might be of inferior quality due to its unusually low price.
Castro emphasized that the rice comes from local farmers and is sold to the National Food Authority (NFA), countering the narrative that it is low-grade or “panghayop” (for animals).
Malacañang also warned the public to be vigilant against possible disinformation campaigns. The Palace alleged that some individuals may pose as buyers to spread fake news by falsely claiming the rice is of poor quality.
The administration continues to push for the P20 rice initiative as part of its broader food affordability and agricultural support programs.
