The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday, October 7, ended the southwest monsoon or habagat season, signaling the country’s shift toward the northeast monsoon or amihan season.
PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando said the bureau observed a gradual change in the country’s weather pattern due to the strengthening of the high-pressure system over East Asia and the southward movement of the intertropical convergence zone.
This shift ends the rainy season in the western parts of Luzon and the Visayas. Last year, the state weather bureau declared the start of the amihan season on November 19.
Servando said PAGASA will declare the start of the northeast monsoon season in the coming weeks as the transition continues, bringing cooler and drier air to most parts of the country.*
