Reddit and Discord may face restrictions on their operations or access in the Philippines if they fail to comply with a directive from the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC).
The directive comes amid concerns over online threats, violent extremist content, and the exploitation of minors following recent school shooting incidents.
The CICC has given the two online platforms 24 hours to designate a resident agent or local representative in the country who can coordinate with Philippine authorities on matters related to their operations.
CICC Executive Director Undersecretary Renato Paraiso said the agency is not asking the platforms to police the entire internet.
Instead, the CICC wants the platforms to remain accessible and respond quickly to online activities that may pose a risk to children and communities.
The agency also asked Reddit and Discord to submit plans for stronger safety standards, rapid-response mechanisms, and age-verification or age-assurance measures.
Meanwhile, the CICC is coordinating with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to arrange meetings with Meta, Discord, Reddit, and other digital platforms.
