The National Maritime Council (NMC) stressed that the Philippines’ position on the West Philippine Sea remains clear and consistent.
According to the NMC, it supports the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in its recent statements addressing what it described as “unfounded” and “misleading claims” regarding developments in the disputed waters.
The council said the country’s position is anchored on truth, transparency, and the rule of law in protecting its maritime rights and interests.
It added that this stance is grounded in international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitral Award.
The NMC also emphasized the importance of accurate and evidence-based discourse on maritime issues.
It said that facts documented through transparent and lawful means remain essential to national maritime policy and in informing the public about what is truly happening.
The council stressed that the Philippines does not initiate conflict.
Instead, it said the country’s actions are responsible—aimed at protecting Filipinos, safeguarding sovereignty, and promoting the peaceful resolution of disputes through diplomacy.
The National Maritime Council called for respect for international law in all discussions related to the West Philippine Sea.
It added that it remains united with the DFA and other government institutions in advancing the national position to ensure the country’s sovereignty and jurisdiction.
