A devastating road accident claimed the life of a mother and left five family members injured on Wednesday night in Barangay Barra, Opol, Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental. The November 20 collision has sparked public outcry after it was revealed that the driver responsible for the crash was underage.
The accident occurred around 10:20 p.m. when a speeding SUV collided with another vehicle carrying the victims, who had just returned from a vacation in the U.S. Footage from security cameras showed the offending vehicle striking the victims’ car, causing it to flip over multiple times.
Dr. Jude Rey, the victim’s son, confirmed that three children—aged eight months, three years, and nine years—were among the passengers. “We are heartbroken but thankful the kids survived,” he said.
Authorities reported that the occupants of the offending vehicle fled the scene immediately. Investigations revealed that the underage driver was operating the vehicle recklessly. This revelation has fueled calls for stricter traffic enforcement and accountability for those allowing minors to drive.
The injured family members remain hospitalized. Meanwhile, law enforcement is pursuing the young driver and other parties involved in the incident.
This tragic incident has reignited discussions about road safety, parental responsibility, and the need for stricter measures against underage driving to prevent future tragedies.
