Michael Schumacher’s friend shares rare update—‘He’s different, but he’s here’ after 11-year silence

Former Ferrari boss Jean Todt has once again provided a rare glimpse into the life of Michael Schumacher, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion who has remained out of the public eye since his tragic skiing accident in December 2013.

Schumacher, now 56, suffered severe brain injuries after falling during a ski trip in Meribel, France. Since then, his family has maintained strict privacy regarding his condition, leaving fans and the F1 world with little informationon his recovery.

In a new interview with Italian outlet La Repubblica, Todt, who worked closely with Schumacher during his dominant Ferrari years, confirmed that he still visits him regularly and remains deeply connected to the family.

“I see him regularly and with affection,” Todt shared. “Our bond goes beyond the past work. It is part of my life which today is very far from Formula 1.”

However, he respected the family’s wishes in keeping Schumacher’s medical condition private. “The family has decided not to answer the question [about his health], a choice that I respect,” he added.

A Life Away From the Public Eye

Despite Schumacher’s unknown medical state, Todt previously disclosed that he has watched Formula 1 races with the racing legend. However, in a 2023 interview, he admitted that Schumacher is “simply not the Michael he used to be.”

“Michael is here, so I don’t miss him,” Todt said at the time. “He is different and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him. His life is different now, and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. That’s all there is to say.”

Schumacher’s wife, Corinna Schumacher, has remained steadfast in protecting her husband’s privacy, stating in the 2021 Netflix documentary, Schumacher, that the family has adjusted to their new reality.

“Michael is here. Different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength,” she said. “We do therapy, and we do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he’s comfortable.”

Why No Health Reports Have Been Released

The Schumacher family has faced intense public curiosity about the F1 legend’s condition. However, family lawyer Felix Damm explained in October 2023 why they have refused to release a final medical report on his health.

“It was always about protecting private things,” Damm told German outlet LTO. He further revealed that if they publicly disclosed Schumacher’s condition, the media interest would never stop.

With Schumacher remaining out of the spotlight for over 11 years, fans continue to support him from afar, while his son, Mick Schumacher, carries on the family legacy in motorsport, now competing in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine.
