George R.R. Martin has once again addressed the long-awaited release of The Winds of Winter, the next installment in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, Today’s Esquire reported. However, much to fans’ frustration, no official release date has been announced despite the author confirming progress on the book.
Martin, now 76, has been working on The Winds of Winter for over a decade. The novel will be the sixth in the series that inspired HBO’s Game of Thrones, and its delay has left readers eagerly awaiting closure to the epic saga. In a recent blog post, Martin confirmed that while the book remains on his to-do list, it is still unfinished.
“It’s been more than 14 years since A Dance with Dragons was published,” Martin acknowledged. “I have more than a thousand manuscript pages written, but there’s still work to do.”
Fans had previously hoped for a 2021 release, but continued delays have fueled speculation about whether the novel will ever see the light of day.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: A New Distraction?
While progress on The Winds of Winter has been slow, Martin has been actively involved in other projects. He recently welcomed the completion of HBO’s adaptation of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms—a prequel series based on his Dunk & Egg novellas.
The new show, set 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, who later becomes King Aegon V Targaryen. Martin confirmed that the series is expected to debut in late 2025 and that plans are already underway to adapt the second novella, The Sworn Sword.
Despite his enthusiasm for the project, some fans have criticized Martin for focusing on spin-offs instead of finishing his long-promised novel.
Will Martin Ever Finish the Series?
With Martin now in his late 70s, speculation has grown over whether he will be able to complete both The Winds of Winter and the planned final book, A Dream of Spring.
In past interviews, Martin has stated that he and his wife, Parris, do not want another author to finish the series if he is unable to complete it. However, he later suggested that he might leave detailed notes should the need arise.
For now, The Winds of Winter remains unfinished, and fans will have to wait even longer to return to Westeros.
