Makabayan targets VP Sara Duterte next with impeachment complaint

The Makabayan Coalition confirmed that Vice President Sara Duterte will be the next official to face an impeachment complaint, following the filing of a second impeachment case against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

The coalition made the announcement after House Secretary General Cheloy Garafil accepted the formal filing of the second impeachment complaint against Marcos.

Makabayan president Liza Maza said the group plans to submit the impeachment complaint against Duterte next week.

Maza also responded to comments from Senate President Tito Sotto, who had said that impeaching the country’s two highest leaders would be an embarrassment on the global stage.

Maza said it would be more shameful, instead, if the Philippines’ top officials were corrupt. She argued that holding leaders accountable should not be seen as disgraceful but as something the public could take pride in if wrongdoing is proven.

The coalition said the public has been calling for both Marcos and Duterte to be made answerable for their actions, adding that accountability in government remains a key demand among citizens.

The planned complaint comes as the one-year bar rule preventing the filing of impeachment cases against the vice president is set to expire on Feb. 6. Under Philippine rules, only one impeachment complaint may be filed against an official within a one-year period.

Makabayan has not yet released further details on the specific grounds for the impeachment complaint against Duterte.

No immediate statement was available from the Office of the Vice President regarding the coalition’s announcement.

The development adds to mounting political tensions in the country as lawmakers face renewed calls for impeachment proceedings involving the nation’s highest officials.
