House Assistant Majority Leader Zia Alonto Adiong has called for the regulation of social media platforms, citing their failure to effectively curb the spread of fake news.
Adiong emphasized that platform operators, such as Meta, which owns Facebook, have full access and control over algorithms and platform behavior. However, he said existing internal policies are insufficient in preventing the misuse of social media as a vehicle for disinformation.
He cited Singapore’s Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act as an example of how governments are addressing online disinformation. According to Adiong, the Philippines should adopt a similar approach to ensure public safety and information integrity.
Aside from regulation, Adiong is also pushing for legislation that would allow the government to impose fair taxation on both platform operators and content creators earning from digital content.
He argued that those profiting in the digital space should be held to the same tax obligations as those in traditional businesses, ensuring fairness in the country’s revenue collection.
