Kanlaon Volcano produced a minor explosive eruption Friday night, October 24, sending an ash plume rising about 2,000 meters above the summit before drifting northeast, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.
The eruption, captured by the IP camera at the Lower Masulog observation station from 8:05 pm to 8:08 pm, also triggered pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) descending the southern upper slopes within one kilometer of the crater.
PHIVOLCS said alert level 2 maintains in effect as the volcano stays active, with sudden steam-driven or minor phreatic explosions still possible.
Residents and visitors are reminded to avoid the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and for aircraft to steer clear of the volcano’s summit due to potential hazards from ash and volcanic fragments.
Authorities continue to closely monitor Kanlaon and urge nearby communities to remain alert for any signs of increased volcanic activity.*
