Two separate fireworks accidents claimed the lives of a vlogger and a young boy during New Year’s Eve celebrations in Cebu province.
In Asturias town, Clifford Amarilla Remis, a 23-year-old vlogger, suffered fatal injuries when a bombshell-type firework exploded in his face and chest. According to police and video evidence, Remis lit the firework, which appeared to malfunction. When he approached it, the firework reignited, causing a deadly blast. Remis was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, in Talisay City, a 10-year-old boy, Jermie Dejacto, died in another tragic fireworks incident involving an illegal firecracker known as “Goodbye Philippines.” Four other minors sustained injuries.
The group had attempted to detonate the firecracker after an initial failure. The children removed the explosive powder, placed it on the ground, covered it with broken tiles, and smashed it with rocks. The resulting explosion sent sharp debris flying, fatally wounding Dejacto in the chest.
The injured children suffered cuts and bruises and were brought to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Authorities are now investigating both incidents, emphasizing the dangers of using illegal fireworks and mishandling pyrotechnics. Fireworks-related injuries remain a critical safety concern during the holiday season in the Philippines.
Both cases highlight the severe consequences of ignoring firework safety, with police urging the public to avoid illegal pyrotechnics and exercise extreme caution.
