Inside Dr. Phil’s floundering TV empire: Desperate stunts to save merit TV

Less than a year after its launch, Dr. Phil McGraw’s Merit TV is facing significant challenges. Insiders claim the network resorted to staging fake shows to impress investors. On February 2, during a visit by potential investors, the network allegedly put on an entire show that never aired. Once the investors left, the production ceased immediately.

Dr. Phil’s Desperate Measures

The network, launched with high hopes by Dr. Phil McGraw, has been hemorrhaging cash and staff. Sources reveal that four months after starting, Merit TV laid off nearly a third of its employees. Many of these workers had moved to Texas for the job, expecting to be part of what Dr. Phil promised would be the ‘future of television.’ Instead, they encountered chaos and underfunding.

One former employee expressed frustration, stating they were let go without any warning or compensation. This mass layoff was part of what Merit Street Media, the parent company, called a “strategic consolidation.”

Struggling Viewership and Distribution

Despite having distribution deals with services like DirecTV, Dish, and AT&T U-verse, Merit TV is notably absent from major streaming platforms like Fubo and Hulu + Live TV. This absence, coupled with small audiences, makes it difficult for third-party companies to estimate viewership.

Merit TV relies heavily on support from Trinity Broadcasting Network, its partner in Merit Street Media, to bolster its distribution. However, this backing has not translated into the success Dr. Phil McGraw might have envisioned.

Response from Merit TV

In response to these allegations, a Merit TV spokesperson defended the network’s practices. They confirmed that during the investor tour, they were indeed filming a pilot for a new show, ‘The News on Merit TV: Best of the Week,’ which aired as a test. The spokesperson also noted that Merit TV is available in 200 million homes and that its reach has occasionally outranked competitors, according to Nielsen data.

The Future of Dr. Phil’s Network

The situation looks bleak for Dr. Phil McGraw’s latest venture. An experienced TV executive commented that there was no real strategy from the start, leading to the current crisis. Another employee from Merit TV warned that without substantial financial support, Dr. Phil’s dream might soon turn into his biggest failure.

As Dr. Phil McGraw grapples with these issues, the future of Merit TV hangs in the balance, with insiders and viewers alike watching closely to see if this once-promising network can recover or if it will indeed circle the drain.
