Hontiveros says opposition timeline unchanged despite Sara Duterte 2028 bid

Senate Deputy Majority Leader Risa Hontiveros said the timeline of the united opposition for the 2028 national elections will not change despite Vice President Sara Duterte’s declaration that she intends to run for president.

Hontiveros said each political leader has the freedom to decide their own plans, noting that individuals have the “free will” to choose their course of action. Her remarks came after Duterte announced her intention to seek the presidency in the 2028 elections.

The senator said the opposition’s timetable remains in place. She said members of the bloc are still looking at possibly naming a front runner before the end of 2026 or within the first quarter of 2027.

Hontiveros added that the group is currently focused on strengthening unity among reform-minded leaders and supporters. She said building a stronger coalition remains a priority as preparations for the next national election continue.

Despite the political developments, she emphasized that Duterte’s announcement does not affect their internal planning or timeline.

Hontiveros also addressed the possibility that impeachment complaints against the vice president could reach the Senate. She said that if the case is eventually brought before senators, they will base their decision on the evidence presented.

The senator did not elaborate further on potential candidates or specific strategies, saying discussions within the opposition are ongoing.

Duterte’s declaration of a 2028 presidential bid has drawn reactions from various political figures. However, Hontiveros said the opposition will proceed with its current schedule as it works toward forming a unified slate for the elections.
