Sen. Risa Hontiveros rejected allegations made by Sen. Alan Cayetano that the New Majority Bloc is attempting to cover up issues related to the flood control controversy.
The senator issued the statement following remarks made by Cayetano during a live social media broadcast, where he discussed the recent leadership changes that took place during a special session of the Senate.
According to Cayetano, the leadership shift occurred because members of the New Majority Bloc wanted impeachment proceedings to continue and sought to influence the pace of the process.
Aside from his comments regarding impeachment, Cayetano also suggested that a possible reason behind the political developments was an alleged effort to conceal issues connected to the flood control controversy.
Hontiveros disputed the claim, saying there was no basis for the allegation.
She pointed out that the investigation into the flood control issue was initiated by members of their own group, specifically by Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson.
According to Hontiveros, Lacson had already conducted several hearings on the matter while serving in a leadership role connected to the inquiry.
She also noted that Sen. Erwin Tulfo, who now serves as chairman of the Blue Ribbon Committee, has committed to continuing the investigation.
Hontiveros said these circumstances contradict the allegation that there is an effort to suppress or conceal information related to the issue.
The senator added that she could not understand the basis of Cayetano’s statements, given the actions already taken by senators to investigate the controversy.
The exchange highlights continuing disagreements among senators over both the impeachment process and the handling of issues related to flood control projects.
No additional evidence supporting the alleged cover-up was presented in the statements cited by Hontiveros.
