Hontiveros calls for US–Iran ceasefire and return to negotiations

Risa Hontiveros called for a ceasefire and a return to negotiations between the United States and Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Hontiveros, who serves as Senate deputy majority leader, urged both countries to halt hostilities and resume diplomatic talks to prevent further escalation of conflict in the region.

According to the senator, she recalled that negotiations between the United States and Iran had previously been facilitated by Oman before the recent outbreak of violence. She said those diplomatic efforts showed that dialogue between the two countries was possible.

Reports indicated that a day before the attack, there were issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear energy development program. The United States government had reportedly stated its intention to “obliterate” or eliminate Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

Despite these developments, Hontiveros stressed that whatever the underlying cause or dispute between the two nations may be, stopping the fighting should remain the priority.

She said halting the violence would help ensure the safety of people living in areas affected by the tensions.

The senator also emphasized the importance of restoring the rule of international law in addressing disputes between countries.

Hontiveros said diplomatic solutions and negotiations remain crucial in preventing wider conflict and protecting civilians in the region.

Her statement comes as concerns grow over the possible consequences of rising tensions between the United States and Iran, particularly in the Middle East, where conflicts involving major powers could have broader regional and global implications.

The senator reiterated that dialogue and adherence to international law are essential in resolving disputes peacefully and maintaining stability.
