The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) has once again appealed to the Department of Education (DepEd) to reconsider the implementation of the In-Service Training (INSET) scheduled from October 27 to 30.
The group pointed out that this period has been designated in the school calendar as the Health and Wellness Break for Teachers and Learners.
In a statement, TDC Chair Benjo Basas explained that this time should be dedicated to rest, recovery, and completion of academic tasks for teachers, especially after experiencing typhoons, volcanic eruptions, fires, and earthquakes.
He stressed that these disasters have greatly affected the overall health, well-being, and emotional state of both teachers and students.
Basas added that pushing through with the INSET during the wellness break would defeat the purpose of giving teachers and learners the opportunity to recover from the physical, mental, and emotional strain of the school cycle.
Instead of providing relief, he said, the INSET would only add more burden to already overworked teachers.
With the training set to take place next week, the TDC is calling for an immediate dialogue with DepEd to discuss the matter.
