Gatchalian tells sleepy impeachment court visitors to stay home

Senate President Win Gatchalian advised people who feel sleepy while attending the impeachment trial to stay home rather than sleep inside the Senate impeachment court.

Gatchalian said those who are too tired to watch the proceedings in person could simply remain at home and get some sleep.

He also suggested that they could watch the impeachment proceedings on television instead.

Gatchalian said it would not be appropriate for people to attend the impeachment court only to fall asleep during the proceedings.

The Senate president acknowledged that the seats in the VIP gallery are comfortable, noting that they are equipped with mattresses.

Despite this, Gatchalian said sleeping inside a regular court would also not be allowed because people are expected to show respect for the court.

His remarks came after Rep. Benny Abante was seen sleeping or appearing to doze off twice during recent impeachment proceedings.

Abante was reportedly seen with his eyes closed behind the witnesses and at another time in the VIP gallery.

The impeachment proceedings are being held before the Senate sitting as an impeachment court.

Gatchalian’s comments focused on the conduct expected from people attending the proceedings, particularly those who may become sleepy while watching the trial.

He said people who cannot stay awake during the proceedings have the option of watching from home instead.

The Senate president also emphasized that respect for the court should be observed during proceedings, regardless of the comfort of the seating area.
