Freddie McClendon’s painful past resurfaces—father’s shocking murder detailed in emotional ‘48 Hours’ investigation

As American Idol contestant Freddie McClendon prepares to take the stage, his heartbreaking family tragedy is coming back into the spotlight. A recent episode of 48 Hours revisited the shocking murder of McClendon’s father, Davis McClendon, who was killed in a hit-and-run that was later revealed to be a calculated crime.

The Death of Davis McClendon

On May 7, 2023, Davis McClendon, 46, was found dead near his wrecked BMW in what was initially believed to be a hit-and-run accident. His body was discovered about 50 feet from the vehicle, raising suspicions that he had been outside the car when he was struck.

Authorities quickly uncovered a deeper mystery. Two women present at the scene, Davis’ girlfriend Meredith Haynie and Megan McGovern, who babysat Meredith’s children, provided key details. Meredith said Davis had called her just minutes before his death, then abruptly went silent. Concerned, she and Megan drove to the location he had given her and found his body.

Investigators noticed an oil trail near Davis’ car, along with footprints and tire tracks leading away from the scene. The tracks led them to the home of Bud Ackerman’s parents—Ackerman being Meredith’s estranged husband. Police found Ackerman’s truck in the driveway with visible damage and an oil leak.

A Murder That Shocked a Community

Authorities believed Ackerman had intentionally hit Davis with his truck after the two men had arranged to meet. Evidence suggested Ackerman had sideswiped Davis’ BMW, then struck him as he stood outside the vehicle.

Meredith and Bud had a history of conflict, and officials built a case arguing that the attack was premeditated. Bud, however, claimed he did not see Davis in the dark and insisted it was an accident.

In 2024, the case went to trial. After just 30 minutes of deliberation, the jury found Ackerman guilty of murder. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison.
