A Filipino mountaineer lost his life to hypothermia while trekking through the freezing slopes of the Northern Japan Alps, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed on Friday, October 17.
The fatality was part of a group of seven Filipino climbers who began their ascent on October 12.
The trek turned tragic when the victim collapsed amid severe cold conditions.
Two other members of the team were hospitalized for trauma. One has since been discharged, while the other remains under medical care and may be released next week.
The DFA said the Philippine Consulate General in Nagoya has been working closely with Japanese authorities and the victim’s family to complete documentation and arrange the repatriation of the remains.
The agency assured continued “assistance to the Filipino mountaineers and their families.”
