Drilon urges senators: put national interest first in VP Sara impeachment trial

Former Senate President Franklin Drilon has warned about developments in the Senate amid the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

In an interview, Drilon said the greatest threat facing the Senate is the potential loss of public trust resulting from a failure in the impeachment process.

According to him, the Senate’s ability to conduct a credible impeachment trial is directly linked to the strength and stability of the institution itself.

Drilon also said that while the Senate has undergone a change in leadership, the underlying challenges remain unresolved.

He noted that senators should not deceive themselves into thinking the issue has ended, as challenges surrounding the Senate presidency are likely to continue due to the impeachment proceedings and the approaching 2028 elections.

In closing, Drilon warned that it would be difficult to predict the consequences if the public comes to believe that the Senate is attempting to conceal the truth.

He said he joins fellow Filipinos in calling on senators to put the country’s interests above all else, especially when they cast what could be one of the most consequential votes of their careers.
