DOH outlines preparedness measures for “The Big One”

The Department of Health (DOH) says it is ready in the event that “The Big One” — a magnitude 7.2 earthquake — strikes.

According to Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa, several hospitals across Metro Manila have already been designated as main healthcare access points within four quadrants of the region.

North Quadrant
Covers the cities of Caloocan, Quezon City, Valenzuela, San Juan, and Mandaluyong.
Designated hospitals include:

  • Lung Center of the Philippines
  • National Kidney and Transplant Institute
  • East Avenue Medical Center
  • Philippine Heart Center
  • Philippine Children’s Medical Center
  • Philippine Orthopedic Center
  • Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital and Sanitarium

Eastern Quadrant
Covers Marikina, Pasig, Mandaluyong, and parts of Quezon City — the area closest to the West Valley Fault.
Accessible hospitals include:

  • Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center
  • Rizal Medical Center
  • Quirino Memorial Medical Center

Western Quadrant
Includes Manila, Malabon, and Navotas.
Tondo Medical Center has been selected as one of the primary healthcare facilities.

Southern Quadrant
Covers Las Piñas, Makati, Muntinlupa, Parañaque, Taguig, Pateros, and Pasay.
Key facilities in this area are:

  • Las Piñas General Hospital and Satellite Trauma Center
  • Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM)

Herbosa added that beyond the preparation of public hospitals, the DOH is coordinating with local governments and private hospitals in Metro Manila to provide support to DOH hospitals in case of emergencies.
