DOE pushes energy-saving rule in government procurement

The government has ordered all agencies to purchase only energy-efficient products certified by the Department of Energy (DOE) to promote sustainability and reduce electricity use.

The DOE said on Thursday, October 23, that the Inter-Agency Energy Efficiency and Conservation Committee (IAEECC) approved a resolution that enforces the Minimum Energy Performance for Products (MEPP) standards under the Philippine Energy Labeling Program (PELP).

The committee adopted the resolution to fast-track the implementation of the Government Energy Management Program (GEMP) under Administrative Order No. 15, s. 2024, which directs all offices to cut energy consumption by at least 10 percent.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, who heads the IAEECC, said the measure pushes the public sector to lead the campaign for energy efficiency. She noted that the policy promotes responsible energy use, reduces government expenses, and supports national climate targets.

The DOE said the directive compels all offices to adopt energy-efficient technologies that lower electricity bills, cut operating costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The agency coordinates with the Procurement Service–Department of Budget and Management (PS-DBM) to align procurement procedures and supply catalogs with DOE performance and labeling standards.

The DOE said the initiative also strengthens the government’s long-term goals of achieving energy self-sufficiency, sustainability, and climate responsibility under the Philippine Energy Plan and the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Program.*
