DENR preparing for possible impact of Super El Niño

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is continuing its preparations for the possible threat of a Super El Niño phenomenon.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) earlier reported that a Super El Niño may develop toward the latter part of 2026, potentially bringing severe drought conditions across Southeast Asia and Australia.

During the Kapihan sa Manila Bay Forum, Environment Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna said government agencies have already begun coordinating efforts to prepare for the possible effects of extreme heat.

One of the main concerns being studied is the possible water shortage in early 2027, with only about six months left to identify alternative water sources.

According to Cuna, the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) is already reviewing water allocation policies and may reduce allocations for certain sectors if necessary.

At the same time, he urged local government units, business firms, and households to adopt rainwater harvesting systems to maximize water collection during the rainy season.

The government is also considering cloud seeding operations and desalination projects to help secure water supply if needed.
