The death toll from the landfill collapse in Cebu City has risen to eight, according to the latest official report released early Monday.
Authorities said eight fatalities have been confirmed following the collapse of a landfill site in Barangay Binaliw. As of 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, search and retrieval operations remained ongoing for the remaining 28 individuals still reported missing.
Rescue teams continued to comb through debris at the site, working against time as families of the missing stayed nearby awaiting updates. Officials have yet to announce when the search operations may conclude.
Among those keeping watch near the site was Agustino Cabag, 65, who has been waiting for news about his loved ones since the collapse. Two members of Cabag’s family were among those buried when the landfill gave way on Jan. 8.
Cabag was seen monitoring the ongoing operations from a distance, using a small telescope or binoculars to follow the movement of rescuers at the site. He remained hopeful that his family members would still be found as operations continued.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the identities of the victims or the conditions of those still missing. No additional information has been provided on the cause of the landfill collapse.
The incident has drawn attention to safety concerns surrounding landfill sites, as families and residents in the area continue to wait for answers while recovery efforts remain underway.
