Death toll from landslide in Indonesia rises

The death toll from a landslide in West Java province, Indonesia, has climbed to 17.

The incident, which struck a residential area in the Bandung Barat region over the weekend, was caused by heavy rainfall.

More than 30 houses were buried by the landslide.

According to Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency, many people remain missing.

Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari said that around 70 individuals are still unaccounted for.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Navy chief Muhammad Ali confirmed that 23 navy personnel were trapped in the landslide.

The personnel were reportedly participating in border patrol training when the incident occurred.

On Sunday, authorities said additional minor landslides occurred due to bad weather, further hampering rescue operations.
