Datu Odin Sinsuat eyes town-wide alcohol sale ban

The local government of Datu Odin Sinsuat in Maguindanao del Norte is pushing for a ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages across the municipality, local officials said.

Vice Mayor Datu Bobsteel Sinsuat said the Sangguniang Bayan is currently studying all possible measures to fully implement a prohibition on alcohol sales in the town.

Sinsuat clarified that the proposed ban will directly apply to barangays with a Muslim majority. Business owners found violating the ordinance may face corresponding penalties, including the revocation of business permits, once the measure is enforced.

In areas where residents are mostly Christians, the local government is also planning to introduce a separate ordinance that would prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages to Muslims.

Under the proposal, if a Muslim individual is caught drinking alcohol and is able to identify where the beverage was purchased, the store involved may also be held liable under the law, according to the vice mayor.

Sinsuat acknowledged that enforcing the planned regulations would not be easy, citing the need for coordination and clear guidelines at the barangay level.

Despite the challenges, he said effective implementation remains possible if the town passes a clear and well-defined ordinance that outlines responsibilities, coverage and penalties.

The local government has not yet announced a timeline for the passage of the proposed measures, as discussions at the municipal council level are ongoing.

Officials said further consultations may be conducted to ensure the ordinance aligns with local conditions and existing laws before final approval.
