The Department of Agriculture (DA) confirmed that it will take over the development and construction of farm-to-market roads (FMRs) from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) starting next year.
During a hearing this month, the DA said it will lead the implementation of the projects after discovering that some FMR projects under the DPWH were allegedly overpriced.
In a statement, the DA said that the move will provide a more “focused approach” in building agricultural lifelines.
According to the agency, preparations are underway for the full handover from DPWH by 2026.
Meanwhile, Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized that around 1,000 kilometers of FMRs still need to be constructed this year. Because of this, he said there is a need to look for other ways to ensure these roads are completed as soon as possible.
