The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) continues its investigation into the controversial policy in Maguindanao del Sur known as “Operation Supak,” which allegedly targets LGBTQ individuals.
The policy was first reported by 89.3 Brigada News FM Cotabato, stating that barangay officials were reportedly visiting the homes of individuals they perceive as lesbian or gay and requiring them to report to the barangay hall.
In an interview with Brigada News FM Manila, CHR Equality and Human Rights Center Chief Atty. Twyla Rubin emphasized that as government officials, all policies and actions implemented must always align with the law.
She added that, to their knowledge, there is no policy or law that prohibits same-sex relationships between men or between women.
Because of this, she stressed that such individuals should not be targeted.
In line with this, the CHR said it is ready to provide assistance to the individuals affected by the policy.
Aside from conducting a mandated human rights investigation, the CHR assured that medical and legal services will be made available to them.
Psychosocial support is also prepared for those affected.
