Boracay Island continued to thrive as one of the world’s premier travel destinations, despite experiencing a decline in tourist arrivals for several months before the end of 2024.
From January to October 2024, Boracay Island welcomed 1,719,849 tourists, a decrease from 1,791,594 in 2023, according to the Malay Municipal Tourism Office (MMTO).
This decline primarily results from a 3.25% drop in domestic tourism, which typically accounts for the largest portion of Boracay’s visitors.
The MMTO recorded 1,358,947 local tourists during this period, compared to 1,404,633 in the same timeframe last year. Additionally, international arrivals decreased by 2.88%, with 341,606 foreign visitors compared to 351,730 in 2023.
Although the island faced challenges in the first ten months of the year, recent trends highlight its remarkable resilience and a shift towards more diverse international markets, with European travelers playing a significant role in its recovery.
Despite this decline, Boracay has seen a rapid increase in tourist arrivals as it enters the holiday season. From December 23 to 26, nearly 35,000 tourists flocked to the island.
Resurgence
Malay town Mayor Frolibar Bautista reported 25,000 arrivals from December 23 to 25, followed by an additional 10,000 arrivals by the evening of December 26. This surge exceeds the pre-holiday daily average of 5,000 to 6,000 visitors.
Domestic tourists continue to serve as the backbone of Boracay’s tourism, as they made up the majority of the 79,357 arrivals between December 1 and 15. However, the highlight is Boracay’s recent success in attracting European tourists.
After participating in the World Travel Market (WTM) London 2024, Bautista noticed a significant increase in visitors from Europe, crediting the event for effectively positioning Boracay as a global destination.
In November, Boracay welcomed 162,451 visitors, which included 130,405 domestic travelers, 30,660 international tourists, and 1,386 overseas Filipinos and workers (OFWs).
Although total arrivals decreased, Boracay remains optimistic about the future. In October 2024, the island experienced a small yet meaningful increase in foreign tourists, welcoming 25,718 arrivals, primarily from South and East Asia, as well as 118,008 local visitors.
Optimistic Boracay
The Department of Tourism (DOT) in Western Visayas said that the island’s tourism sector will benefit from an anticipated influx of international cruise tourists, along with new tourism initiatives that aim to diversify the island’s offerings.
These initiatives include the Boracay biking tour, which appeals to both adventure enthusiasts and families; the Boracay food crawl, which offers deconstructed meals from local restaurants; and the Boracay wellness workation, a retreat for those seeking relaxation amidst nature.
These unique offerings cater to a broader audience, expanding Boracay’s appeal beyond its famous beaches. Looking ahead, the DOT remains optimistic about reaching its target of 2 million tourists by the end of 2024.
