Bohol Governor Erico “Aris” Aumentado has called for a formal investigation into the reported vandalism of coral formations in the waters of Panglao, Bohol.
Aumentado urged the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) Panglao, and the Bohol Environment Management Office to take immediate action following the circulation of a viral video on social media.
The footage showed a coral reef with the words “JUST DIVE” etched onto its surface, sparking anger and disappointment among residents and environmental advocates.
The governor described the act as alarming and destructive, suggesting it may have been done intentionally by individuals aiming to harm the environment or disrupt Bohol’s thriving tourism industry.
Aumentado called on authorities to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the damage, emphasizing that such actions not only harm marine ecosystems but also tarnish the province’s reputation as a prime diving destination.
Environmental groups and local officials have since expressed concern over the growing impact of human activities on marine life, urging divers and tourists to practice responsible and sustainable tourism while exploring Bohol’s coastal attractions.
