BAYAN urges public action to condemn developments in the Senate

The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan has called on the public to take action and condemn what it described as an “illegitimate maneuver” by the Senate majority bloc.

In a statement, BAYAN claimed that the alleged “Senate majority boycott” is an attempt by the bloc to remain in power despite supposedly no longer having the numbers needed to advance its agenda.

The group warned that the ongoing leadership issues in the Senate could hamper the chamber’s ability to properly conduct the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

According to BAYAN, the situation adds further frustration and hardship to Filipinos who are already struggling with high prices, low wages, inadequate public infrastructure, and insufficient social services.

The organization also alleged that, in recent weeks, the Senate facilitated the escape of a suspect charged with crimes against humanity, attempted to revise its rules, and is now failing to attend plenary sessions following the arrest of one of its allies.

As a result, BAYAN urged the public to remain vigilant and continue protesting against the actions of the Senate majority bloc.

The group also called for the immediate arrest of Senator Ronald dela Rosa, the start of the impeachment trial of Vice President Duterte, and accountability for all corrupt public officials.

BAYAN said it will continue to speak out as long as what it described as the “Duterte bloc” continues to maneuver the Senate into becoming a refuge for “notorious plunderers” and “human rights violators.”
