Army troops clash with NPA in Surigao del Sur

Troops from the 36th Infantry “Valor” Battalion clashed with members of the New People’s Army in Surigao del Sur, resulting in the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and assorted logistical supplies, the military said.

According to the 36th Infantry Battalion, the encounter involved remaining members of the New People’s Army identified as elements of Squad 2 and Squad 3 of the Sub-Regional Sentro de Grabidad Westland under the Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee.

Following the clash, government forces recovered an AK47 rifle with a defaced serial number, magazines, ammunition, and a rifle grenade. Also seized were medical paraphernalia and various camp supplies believed to have been used by the armed group.

Military officials reported that no casualties were sustained by government troops during the encounter. The number of casualties on the side of the New People’s Army remains undetermined as of this report.

After the encounter, troops immediately conducted clearing and security operations in the area to ensure the safety of nearby communities. The military said these operations aim to prevent the armed group from regrouping and to secure surrounding villages from possible threats.

Lt. Col. Ante Jr. urged the public to withdraw support from the New People’s Army, stressing the importance of community cooperation in maintaining peace and security. He also called on remaining members of the armed group to surrender and avail themselves of the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program.

The 36th Infantry Battalion reiterated its commitment to protect civilians and continue operations to help maintain peace and promote progress in Surigao del Sur, as security efforts in the province remain ongoing.
