Acidre brands Imee Marcos video ‘political vandalism’

Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre questioned why the Senate allowed itself to be used as a platform for what he described as political tactics rooted in speculation and insinuation.

Acidre made the statement following the video presentation shown by Sen. Imee Marcos during her privilege speech. The video included allegations that Charter Change efforts were being pushed to create a “no election scenario” and extend political terms.

According to Acidre, the issue surrounding Charter Change and the manner in which it was presented was an embarrassment to the Senate. He said it reflected how propaganda can weaken political discourse while being portrayed as legitimate legislative debate.

The lawmaker said the incident served as a reminder of why many Filipinos have grown weary of politics marked by intrigue, edited narratives and unchecked speculation.

Acidre argued that if such practices become normalized, public officials could simply present videos, raise conspiracy claims and allow social media platforms to amplify accusations without proper verification.

He described the presentation as a form of “political vandalism” and characterized it as gossip disguised as a privilege speech.

The congressman further emphasized that the controversy should concern the public beyond the personalities involved. He said privilege speeches are intended to promote accountability and should not be used to defend or advance unverified narratives that could damage reputations and undermine public trust.

While Acidre welcomed the withdrawal of the video presentation, he maintained that the move does not erase the damage already caused.

According to the lawmaker, statements and accusations aired within the Senate chamber can have lasting consequences even after they are retracted.

The controversy stemmed from the video presented during Marcos’ privilege speech, which raised allegations involving Charter Change, a possible “no election scenario,” and political term extension.
