Seven people have been killed after a five-story student hostel collapsed in Satya Niketan, New Delhi, India, with rescue teams continuing to search the rubble for possible survivors.
The building, which housed mostly students from nearby Delhi University campuses, collapsed on Sunday, September 6, in the densely populated area of Satya Niketan.
At least 12 people were rescued and brought to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, or AIIMS, with some sustaining serious injuries. Three of those rescued were initially reported to be in critical condition.
The building was estimated to be around 50 to 55 years old and had reportedly undergone renovation work, particularly in the basement, before the collapse.
Authorities are investigating whether water accumulation, seepage and ongoing construction work in the basement may have weakened the building’s structure.
According to investigators, repair work was reportedly being carried out to address waterlogging and seepage.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident and announced plans for mandatory structural audits and safety certifications for buildings used by students and other members of the public.
Police have arrested the building’s owner and family members in connection with the collapse, while five officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi have reportedly been suspended as the investigation into possible negligence continues.
Rescue operations continued with police, firefighters and disaster-response teams using heavy equipment and sniffer dogs to clear the debris and check for anyone who may still be trapped.
